Reintroducing Exercise to Your Routine After Weight Loss Surgery

The rapid fat loss associated with bariatric surgery also involves the loss of muscle. This is one major reason why you’ll need to exercise regularly after having a gastric sleeve procedure. Additionally, getting physically active will help you reach your target weight range, elevate your mood, and reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Resuming Your Exercise Routine

Immediately after the operation, you must follow your surgeon’s activity restriction guidelines. Depending on the type of surgery you had, your overall health, and your recovery, you might not be able to exercise for several weeks. Only begin reintroducing exercise once your doctor approves it.

Adhering to Activity Restrictions

Even when you do begin exercising, you’ll have to follow certain restrictions until you’re completely healed. For example, your gastric surgeon may instruct you to avoid lifting anything heavier than 15 pounds until the six-week point. You might be asked not to do any abdominal exercises for eight to 12 weeks.

Starting an Initial Workout Routine

Usually, bariatric patients are advised to start with gentle flexibility stretches and exercises. Walking routines can usually be started not long after the operation. Try to do some sort of physical activity every day, but don’t try to do too much at once. Instead, gradually increase the duration of your activity.

Following a Balanced Workout Routine

Once you’re completely healed, you might consider scheduling a few sessions with a fitness trainer, who can help you design a balanced fitness routine. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on most days of the week. You should also do strength training exercises at least twice per week. Remember to stretch before and after each workout, as this reduces your risk of a sports injury, and stay well-hydrated.
