How to Prepare for Your Overnight Hospital Stay

Weight Loss Surgery Houston

When you have weight loss surgery in Houston, you will almost certainly spend at least one night in the hospital. During the stay, the medical team will keep you under observation to ensure there are no surgical complications and help you transition to the liquid diet you will follow for the first period of your recovery. Your weight loss surgeon will help you prepare for what to expect during your hospital visit. Here are some tips to make yourself more comfortable during your overnight stay.

Bring Your Own Pillow
Hospital pillows are thin, and could generally be uncomfortable. After surgery, all you’ll want is some rest, so bringing your pillow from home will make it a little easier to sleep. If you think that the hospital pillow won’t bother you, consider at least bringing your own pillowcase, which will be much softer than the bleached and starched ones provided by the hospital. Keep in mind that having a pillow for your ride home can make you more comfortable in the car. one more benefit of the extra pillow is to hold against your abdomen while doing breathing exercises “ medically called; Incentive spirometry”.

Lip Balm:
After surgery, you won’t be allowed to eat or drink anything for hours.. Many patients are surprised at how quickly their lips become dehydrated. Pack some moisturizing lotion and lip balm to control your dry, itchy skin and lips. This won’t ease the dry mouth you may experience, but you will be grateful that your skin and lips feel soothed.

Pack Comfortable Clothing
After surgery, fashion will be the last thing on your mind. You will be getting up and moving around the same day as your surgery in most cases, and you will get up and get dressed the next day. It will be difficult to bend over in the first few weeks, so bring clothing that can easily be pulled on and that doesn’t constrict you at the waist.
