What’s Nearby

The history of the modern city of Houston dates back to 1836, when two entrepreneurs purchased more than 6,000 acres of land on the Buffalo Bayou to found a city. The city is named for Sam Houston, who served as a general in the Battle of San Jacinto and president of Texas in the mid-1830s. By 1930, the city had become the most populous in the state of Texas, and it continued to grow throughout the 20 th century with the advent of air conditioning, which made the area a more appealing location for a number of large corporations to relocate.

Today, Houston is home to about 2.29 million people, and it is the largest city in the Southern United States. Because it is home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where Mission Control is located, Houston is widely known as the Space City. Bayou City and H-Town are also popular nicknames among area locals.
