People often use the word “metabolism” in reference to weight loss. For example, gastric bypass surgery can lead to advantageous metabolic changes. A faster metabolism means the body uses more energy, which facilitates weight loss or maintenance. However, the clinical definition of metabolism is actually any biochemical process that takes place in the body for the purpose of sustaining life.
When you watch this video, you’ll learn more about your metabolism. It explains the two basic metabolic processes: catabolic reactions and anabolic reactions. Catabolic reactions occur when large molecules are broken down to be used as energy. Anabolic reactions are exactly the opposite. These use energy-making larger molecules from smaller molecules.
