Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for Me?
Bariatric surgery is a serious decision. Regardless of which surgery you and your bariatric surgeon decide is right for you— gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, or another bariatric procedure—life will be different after surgery. Keeping weight off over the long term will require that you make certain lifestyle changes.
While successful weight loss will require sacrifices and a period of adjustment, the rewards are worthwhile—the vast majority of patients report dramatic improvements in their quality of life after surgery, and many experience relief or even complete resolution of weight-related health conditions like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes symptoms. Many are able to stop taking medications for these conditions altogether.
Bariatric surgery candidates generally must meet the following criteria, which are based on guidelines established by the National Institute of Health (NIH):
Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, with or without co-occurring conditions like high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, and others. Calculate your BMI.
BMI greater than 35 with co-occurring conditions
Supportive family and social environment
Understanding of the surgery, its risks and potential complications, and the lifestyle changes that will be required before and after surgery
Here are some questions to consider before surgery:
Have you made attempts to lose weight in other ways?
Most people who struggle with obesity have attempted to lose weight in other ways, trying diet after diet and virtually every exercise program available. Those who don’t achieve significant weight loss on a medical weight loss program are generally candidates for surgery.
Are you willing to make serious lifestyle changes?
You simply won’t be able to eat like you did before bariatric surgery. Your stomach will not be able to hold as much food, and overeating can lead to problems like cramping, diarrhea, possible vomiting, or a complication, Eating small portions slowly and choosing foods carefully will be necessary after surgery.
Are your expectations realistic?
Many types of bariatric surgery have high success rates, with patients losing two-thirds to three-quarters of their excess weight. Not all surgeries are successful over the long term, though, and some people will regain some or all of their weight—but this usually happens in patients who continue to make poor diet and lifestyle choices.
It’s important to understand the lifestyle changes that you will be required to adopt in order to keep weight off successfully and to anticipate the possibility of having excess skin which may require one or more additional surgeries down the line to remove. Your bariatric surgeon will help you understand whether you might need additional surgery down the line.
Do you have a serious medical condition?
If you have a serious medical condition, such as cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, or a history of severe psychiatric illness, you may not be a candidate for surgery. Your weight loss doctor will help you understand whether surgery is an option as well as the associated risks. Your doctor will also use a psychological screening to determine whether you are a good candidate for surgery.
