How to Deal with Weight Loss Plateaus After Surgery

Weight Loss Houston

During the first few days and weeks after having gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery, you’ll notice substantial and rapid weight loss. This progress is encouraging, but you should be prepared for the inevitable weight loss plateaus that follow. A weight loss plateau occurs because the body has adjusted to the lower caloric intake. It’s also possible that your body has started to break down muscle for fuel. Weigh yourself regularly so you can detect and deal with plateaus quickly.

Change your exercise routine.
As you become more physically fit, your body will adjust to your typical workout routine, and it won’t be as difficult for you to complete it. This might seem like good news, but it’s actually a contributing factor to weight loss plateaus. You’ll need to increase the intensity and duration of your workout to challenge your body. Consider investing in a personal fitness tracking device that features a heart rate monitor. Calculate your maximum heart rate, which is 220 minus your age. Calculate a range that is 60% to 85% of your maximum heart rate. Your workout should be challenging enough to get your heart rate within this range.

But make sure you run this by your doctor before you start, you might have health conditions that could make some exercise very unhealthy, or very dangerous.

Preserve your lean muscle mass.
When the body starts to break down muscle to use as energy, your metabolism will decrease. This is why your bariatric surgeon will have told you to consume plenty of lean proteins and start strength training. If you’re having trouble fitting enough protein into your meal plan, talk to a dietitian or your surgeon.

Review your sleep patterns.
Resist the urge to wake up earlier to fit in a longer workout, as sleep deprivation can adversely affect your weight loss. This is because sleep deprivation causes hormonal imbalances that affect your hunger perception. And when you’re tired, you’re probably more likely to reach for an extra snack in an attempt to boost your energy levels.
